The making of “Exposure: Light at the end of the tunnel”

Exposure: Light at the end of the tunnel

Materials:
paint swatches, plastic spiral booklet covers, instant film, keyboard keys, decorative metal screen clippings, foils, plastic wrappers, decorative tapes and stickers

Motivation / mindset / meaning:
This piece started with a bunch of over- and under-exposed instant film pictures. Arranging and rearranging the pictures based on their contrast and exposure led me to a layout with bright white on both ends and black in the center. At the time I was nearing the end of grad school (still in the metaphorical tunnel), and the thought occurred to me that the exposure I gained from my PhD experience, the people and ideas and companies and events and everything else I’d learned about, was what gave me optimism for what could be next. “Exposure: Light at the end of the tunnel” was born. From there, I figured out a way to spell out that phrase with keys from a dismantled laptop keyboard. The rest was just coming back periodically to iterate and tweak until the finished piece coalesced.
